How to say “I sleep”, I slept…or I will go to sleep,
in Greek?

Speaking Greek correctly, without knowing how to conjugate a verb, is impossible.
Every sentence has a verb, so one of the most important grammar aspects when you learn Greek, is ….learning verbs!

The verb Κοιμάμαι is conjugated like the verbs

λυπάμαι (I am sorry/ I am sad),
θυμάμαι (I remember),
φοβάμαι (I am afraid/ scared),

So those verbs actually belong to the “passive verb” category.

Good news!
Only these 4 verbs belong to this B2 category, so  verbs ending on -άμαι .
The conjugation of those 4 verbs therefore is the same.

The conjugation of the verb « κοιμάμαι » in present tense

 

Εγώ                             κοιμάμαι

Εσύ                             κοιμάσαι

Αυτός,ή,ό                   κοιμάται

Εμείς                           κοιμόμαστε

Εσείς                           κοιμόσαστε/ κοιμάστε

Αυτοί,ές,ά                  κοιμούνται

Examples

  • Κοιμάμαι νωρίς το βράδυ.                                                              (I sleep early at night)
  • Το μωρό κοιμάται.                                                                           (the baby is sleeping)
  • Ο Κώστας και η Άννα κοιμούνται μέχρι αργά την Κυριακή. (Kostas and Anna sleep until late on Sunday.

    The conjugation of this verb in Future Simple

Εγώ                             θα κοιμηθώ

Εσύ                             θα κοιμηθείς

Αυτός,ή,ό                    θα κοιμηθεί

Εμείς                           θα κοιμηθούμε

Some examples;

 

  •       Θα κοιμηθείς νωρίς απόψε;                                                                         (Will you sleep early tonight?)
  •       Θα κοιμηθούμε στις 21.00, γιατί η πτήση μας είναι στις 5 το πρωί.   (We will sleep at 21.00, because our flight is at 5 in the morning.)
  •      Κύριε Κώστα, τι ώρα θα κοιμηθείτε;                                                          (Mr Kostas, what time will you sleep?)

    The conjugation in Past Simple

Since this verb is used many times in past simple, also this tense is very important

 

Κοιμήθηκα

Κοιμήθηκες

Κοιμήθηκε

Κοιμηθήκαμε

Κοιμηθήκατε

Κοιμήθηκαν/ κοιμηθήκανε

 

Some examples

  •       Πώς κοιμήθηκες;                                    (How did you sleep?)
  •       Δεν κοιμήθηκα καλά χτες.                    (I didn’t sleep well yesterday.)
  •       Η Μαρία δεν κοιμήθηκε καθόλου.      (Maria did not sleep at all.)

A useful tip…

If it is too difficult to remember or use this verb and this conjugation, of course you can also say

Πάω για ύπνο.…. I am going to sleep 

Then you only have to conjugate the verb πάω,
