Omilo was founded in 1996 and the very first Omilo Greek Language and Culture Courses took place in the village of Nea Makri, Attiki, between 1997 and 2006

Dialogue between Dimitris (co-founder) and Marina (teacher)

Λοιπόν, Μαρίνα, βρισκόμαστε στη Νέα Μάκρη, κάνουμε τα μαθήματά μας,
τα οποία είναι πολύ διαφορετικά από τα μαθήματα που έκανες στα φροντιστήρια.

Well, Marina, we are now talking about Nea Makri, we do our Greek lessons there, which are very different from
the lessons you were teaching in the evening schools (before Marina came to Omilo)

Marina

Ναι!

Yes

Dimitris

Έχεις ενήλικες…Έχουμε ένα πολύ διαφορετικό περιβάλλον…

Θυμάσαι κάποια χαρακτηριστική δραστηριότητα και ιδιαίτερα για ανθρώπους
που ήταν στα πρώτα επίπεδα;

You now have adults …We have a very different environment …

Do you remember any typical activity and especially for people who were at the beginning levels in Greek?

Marina

Ναι ναι, βέβαια.

Yes, of course

Πρώτα πρώτα να σου πω ότι η αλλαγή που έκανα από τα σχολικά μαθήματα
στα Ελληνικά για ξένους ήταν μια πολύ μεγάλη αλλαγή, που την χάρηκα πολύ.

Το να διδάσκεις σε παιδιά είναι πολύ ωραίο. Έχεις πάντα επαφή με νέα παιδιά, έχεις την ενέργεια που έχουν τα παιδιά,
αλλά με τους ξένους που μαθαίνουν τη γλώσσα σου είναι τα πράγματα διαφορετικά.

Δηλαδή, πρώτα από όλα, νιώθεις ότι μπορείς να γίνεις φίλος μαζί τους, διότι είσαστε λίγο- πολύ
πια στην ίδια ηλικία. Ακόμη και αν είναι μεγαλύτερες οι διαφορές, είμαστε όλοι ενήλικες.

First of all, let me tell you that the change I made from typical high school lessons toward teaching Greek for foreigners,
was a very big change, which I really enjoyed.

Teaching children is very nice. You always have contact with young children, you have the energy coming from the children,
but with foreigners learning your native language, things are different.

That means, first of all, that you feel that you can become friends with them because you are now
more or less at the same age. Even if the differences are bigger, we are all adults.

Δεύτερον, για τον καθηγητή, τα μαθήματα με ξένους είναι σαν να κάνει ένα ταξίδι ο ίδιος.

Δηλαδή, οι μαθητές μας ταξιδεύουν στη χώρα μας για να μάθουν τα έθιμά μας,
για να μάθουν τη γλώσσα μας και ο καθηγητής την ίδια στιγμή παίρνει από αυτούς εικόνες, ιστορίες…

Είναι σαν ένα βιβλίο, ένα εικονικό βιβλίο!

Second, for the teacher, the lessons with foreigners are like doing a trip himself/herself.
This means that our students travel to our country to learn our traditions,
to learn our language and at the same time, the teacher also gets impressions from them and listens to their stories …

It’s like a book, a picture book!

Δimitris

Και ο καθηγητής ταξιδεύει από τις εμπειρίες και τα εικόνες των μαθητών.

And the teacher travels with the experiences and images of the students.

Marina

Έτσι, λοιπόν, το χάρηκα πάρα πολύ.

Θυμάμαι, εκείνα τα χρόνια στη Νέα Μάκρη… ότι κάτι που κάναμε πάντα
για τις τάξεις των αρχαρίων περισσότερο, ήταν ότι πηγαίναμε πάντα στη λαϊκή.

Κοντά στο ξενοδοχείο που κάναμε τα μαθήματα, γινόταν η λαϊκή, που είναι
πάντα μια φορά την εβδομάδα και πηγαίναμε όλη η τάξη μαζί, και οι μαθητές έπρεπε να πάνε να παραγγείλουν, να πληρώσουν,
να ρωτήσουν για την ποιότητα, για την τιμή, και ήταν ένα πολύ ωραίο ζωντανό μάθημα.

Indeed, so, I enjoyed it very much.

I remember, in those years in Nea Makri … that something we always did, mostly for the beginner classes, was going to the weekly market (vegetables, fruits..).

Near the hotel where we organized the lessons, was the weekly market, which is always taking place once a week, and we went with the whole class together,
and the students had to go order, pay, to ask about the products, about price, and it was a very nice and lively lesson.

Σίγουρα! Πολύ ζωντανό και προφανώς και πολύ ουσιαστικό, γιατί συνέδεαν τις λέξεις
με τις εικόνες.

For sure! Very lively and obviously very substantial, because they connected the words with pictures.

Marina

Έτσι. Και με την πρακτική, βεβαίως, έτσι

Indeed. And immediately into practice, of course

Dimitris

Σαφώς! Κι έτσι, μπορούσανε να αισθανθούν τη γλώσσα στην πρακτική της εφαρμογή, την καθημερινή.

Μάλιστα!

Obviously! And so, they could feel the language in its practical application, the everyday language.
