30 Years Omilo – The Founders’ Story!

Maya and Dimitris AndreadisOmilo Maya & Dimitris

Omilo was founded by Maya and Dimitris Andreadis in 1996, and they have been personally involved in every single Omilo course ever since. From the very beginning until today, they have continued to guide the courses, support the teachers, and welcome students from all over the world.

omilo 30 yearsOmilo celebrates 30 years!

Over the last 30 years, Omilo has expanded from a dream into a successful Greek language school, offering Greek language and culture courses to adult students from all over the world.
In 2026 we celebrate “30 years Omilo”, which is hard to believe…but true!

It all started in 1996, when Omilo was founded by Dimitris and Maya Andreadis.
In addition to being one of the Omilo teachers himself, Dimitris is in charge of the teachers, organizational and financial aspects of the business, while Maya oversees the cultural activities, administration, marketing, social media, website as well as writing blog articles, creating eBooks, Podcasts and writing the Monthly Dose of Greek Sunshine!

With their background of university studies in Greece, Belgium and the USA along with their international experience, Maya and Dimitris are well equipped to be at the helm of this exciting educational endeavor.

Omilo offers a unique approach to teaching Modern Greek, backed by a select team of Greek teachers and staff members. The informal and relaxed atmosphere of Omilo’s classes makes learning Greek an enjoyable and successful experience for all.

Our priority is providing top-quality teaching, but at the same time, Omilo also aims to bring its students into direct contact with local customs, history and culture through various excursions and activities.

From 1997 to the present, the Omilo team has been offering courses in such places as Athens, Nea Makri (Attiki), Limni (Evia), and Nafplion as well as the islands of Hydra, Syros, Andros, Naxos and Lefkada.
Omilo never stopped expanding: in fact, we are constantly looking for new locations.

Last but not least, since 2013 Omilo also publishes language books and materials, free eBooks,
and offers several options to learn Greek online

What Our Students Say ❤️

Our 30th anniversary has already brought us some wonderful messages from former students and friends of Omilo. Thank you for your kind words and, above all, for being part of the Omilo story over the years.

Amparo – SPAIN

“Congratulations! It was a true pleasure studying Greek with you, and I have wonderful memories of Nea Makri, Syros and Athens, as well as of you and your team. I would love to return someday! I wish you another thirty years!”

Albert & Anita – THE NETHERLANDS

“Even after 30 years, your enthusiasm still shines through! What an incredible achievement, and of course, congratulations!

We love the anniversary initiatives and the beautiful photos of Greece. We wish you a wonderful summer, filled with lovely students and many special moments.

Greetings and a big hug from Kythira!”

Liliana Caporale – SWITZERLAND

“Warmest congratulations on Omilo’s 30th anniversary! What a wonderful achievement and inspiring journey, from a beautiful idea in 1996 to an international success.

My language stays with you in Syros remain among my very best memories. I greatly appreciated not only the Greek lessons, but also the warm atmosphere, the activities and the many special moments shared with teachers and fellow students.

Omilo has a wonderful way of bringing people, language and Greek culture together, and I am very happy to have been a small part of this journey. I am sure that I will book another course with Omilo in Syros again one day.

I wish you continued joy, success and many more memorable courses in the years ahead. You have every reason to celebrate, and I raise a glass with you!

Καλό καλοκαίρι και θερμά συγχαρητήρια!”

Maxine Honnest-Redlich – UK

“Congratulations, Omilo! My journey with you started in 2003, on my very first visit to Greece and with my very first Omilo lessons. I arrived at Athens Airport knowing only two or three words of Greek and told the taxi driver, πάμε στη Νέα Μάκρη. I tried a little conversation, and he quickly told me that I was making πολλά λάθη… and he was quite right!

I returned to Nea Makri in 2005, and from then on, to beautiful Syros.

What I loved about Syros—apart from the sea, the lovely pension, the bougainvillea, tavernas and beaches—was that it felt like a Greek island for Greeks. I returned many times, with my last Omilo visit in 2016.

Eventually, I realised that perhaps it was no longer such a good idea to continue travelling on my own. I turned 91 last March! That hasn’t stopped me from returning to Greece accompanied, but I do miss Syros, the lessons and everything else.

So once more, congratulations! You must be very pleased with what you have created, and if one day you decide to sit back and relax, I hope you will leave Omilo in good hands!

With all my love.”

A note from a former teacher

Over the years, around 50 teachers have been part of the Omilo team, and we are happy to still be in touch with many of them today.

It makes us proud to see not only how our students continue their journey with the Greek language, but also how our teachers continue to grow, develop, and follow their own paths in education.

Below, you can read a message from Dora Dienni, who taught at Omilo from 1998 to 2007, before moving on to teach Greek to high school students.

Good evening, Maya, and thank you for the historic photo!

My boys are 12 and 6 now, and last year I received my degree in Psychology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. So, I’ll soon be embarking on a new professional path, opening my own practice alongside my work at the school, where I am vice principal.

I’m branching out in many directions, both out of desire and necessity, and I always follow Omilo and its journey over the years. I have the fondest memories of you and Dimitris, both as people and as employers. Wishing you both all the best. Many greetings and have a wonderful summer!

Thank you for being part of our journey!

Messages like these mean a lot to us. Thirty years of Omilo would not have been possible without the students, teachers, friends and Greece lovers who have shared this journey with us.

If you have an Omilo memory of your own, we would love to hear it too. Share your story, send us a photo, or leave a testimonial, and help us celebrate 30 years of learning Greek in Greece together!
