Wildfires in Greece: How to save your life in case of emergency

Wildfires are in Greece, unfortunately occur every summer season in Greece. Every Greek knows that high temperatures in combination with strong winds, often lead to wildfires. And this is what happened once again this month of July…
We keep our fingers crossed that the existing fires will come to an end soon, and that the remaining summer other forests and villages will be spared from wildfires.
Of course, it is advised to know how to react in case you find yourself close to a fire. Something we unfortunately never learn in school…but it is important!

Mainland Greece; Let’s Learn About The Region Fthiotida and teacher Myrto!

Ας μάθουμε λίγα πράγματα για την περιοχή της Φθιώτιδας στην Ελλάδα!

We are happy to announce that a new experienced teacher, Myrto Yfanti,  starts working at Omilo.
Myrto already was teaching for Omilo during the September 2020 course on the island of Syros and was very enthusiastic to meet so many interested students, from all over the world.

Με χαρά ανακοινώνουμε ότι μια νέα έμπειρη καθηγήτρια, η Μυρτώ Υφαντή, ξεκινά να εργάζεται στο Ομιλώ. Η Μυρτώ δίδαξε πρώτη φορά στο Ομιλώ τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2020 στο νησί της Σύρου και ενθουσιάστηκε που γνώρισε τόσους ενδιαφέροντες μαθητές από όλον τον κόσμο.

Every teacher at Omilo has a different teaching style, as well as a different background 🙂
Myrto grew up in a small village in the prefecture of Fthiotida, the village of Giannitsou.

Lazaretta, The Former Quarantine of Syros Island – Omilo

Who could imagine in March 2020, that the whole world would go to “lockdown” due to the Corona Covid-19 virus, and when traveling many times a “quarantine” is requested? All this belonged to history, most of us thought… or the younger generation probably never heard of the word “quarantine” before. S0 let’s see how the quarantine was organized on the Greek island of Syros, in the previous century.


Since 2005, during the summer months, Omilo is organizing its Greek Language and Culture courses on the island of Syros. The Omilo students usually fly to Athens or Mykonos, and from there travel by boat to Hermoupolis, the harbor of Syros island, and the capital of all Cycladic islands.

When you are about to arrive and face the harbor, you have a magnificent view over the hills of Hermoupolis and Ano Syros.  When you look to the left, on the southern extremity of the port, you also see a stone building, which once was the island’s quarantine, the “Lazaretto”. Nowadays, the building is beautifully lit at night, so it is easy to spot.

The pomegranate brings good luck for the New Year – Greek tradition

On the first day of the New Year, in many Greek homes,  the new year is welcomed by opening a pomegranate for good luck. It is also common  to receive  a pomegranate (‘ρόδι’, made of metal, glass or other materials) as a gift in Greece,  to bring good luck ( ‘γούρι”) for the new year.
