Mikis Theodorakis, the beloved and internationally known Greek composer,
whose music and political life are also well-known abroad, died on September 2^nd, 2021. He was 96.

Theodorakis’ career, which started in his early years, produced a hugely varied body of work.
He has not only composed symphonic music, music for operas, ballet, chamber music, but of course a great number of Greek songs.

Apart from his musical career, he is also remembered by Greeks for his stubborn opposition to postwar regimes and dictatorships.

He will be never forgotten.

Ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης, ο ιδιαίτερα αγαπητός και διεθνώς γνωστός Έλληνας συνθέτης, του οποίου η μουσική και η πολιτική ζωή είναι γνωστές και στο εξωτερικό, έφυγε από τη ζωή στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου 2021, στα 96 του χρόνια.
Η καριέρα του Θεοδωράκη, η οποία ξεκίνησε σε μικρή ηλικία, παρήγαγε ένα τεράστιο έργο με μεγάλη ποικιλία. Δεν έχει συνθέσει μόνο συμφωνική μουσική, μουσική για όπερα, μπαλέτο και μουσική δωματίου, αλλά και έναν μεγάλο αριθμό ελληνικών τραγουδιών.
Εκτός από τη μουσική του καριέρα, οι Έλληνες τον θυμούνται και για την επίμονη αντίστασή του στο μεταπολεμικό καθεστώς και τη δικτατορία. Δε θα τον ξεχάσουμε ποτέ.

Mikis Theodorakis was born in 1925 on the island of Xios. He is one of the most important Greek composers, lyricists, and Greek orchestra directors. He composed music based on the lyrics of award-winning poets of Greek and foreign origin, such as Giannis Ritsos, Odysseus Elytis, Giorgos Seferis, Pablo Neruda, Frederico Garcia Lorca…

Ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης γεννήθηκε το 1925 στη Χίο. Είναι ένας από τους σημαντικότερους Έλληνες συνθέτες, στιχουργός, και διευθυντής ορχήστρας. Στα τραγούδια του χρησιμοποίησε ως στίχους ποιήματα βραβευμένων ποιητών ελληνικής και ξένης καταγωγής, όπως οι Γιάννης Ρίτσος, Οδυσσέας Ελύτης, Γιώργος Σεφέρης, Πάμπλο Νερούδα, Φ. Γ. Λόρκα.

After studying in Athens and in Paris, and upon his return to Greece in 1960, he recorded for the first time the “Epitaph” of Giannis Ritsos. In the same year, Mikis Theodorakis started writing the music for the “Axion Esti” (Poetry of Odysseus Elytis), as well as the music for “Epifaneia” (Poetry of Giorgos Seferis).

Το 1960, λοιπόν, με την επιστροφή του στην Ελλάδα από το Παρίσι (όπου σπούδασε), ηχογραφείται για πρώτη φορά ο “Επιτάφιος” σε ποίηση του Γιάννη Ρίτσου. Την ίδια χρονιά ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης αρχίζει το “Άξιον Εστί” σε ποίηση του Οδυσσέα Ελύτη, αλλά γράφει και τη μουσική για τα “Επιφάνεια” σε ποίηση του Γιώργου Σεφέρη.

In 1964 M. Theodorakis composed the internationally well-known Greek instrumental song “Zorbas” (also known as “sirtaki dance”).
For this song, Mikis Theodorakis was nominated for a Grammy. (Click HERE to listen to it).

In 1970 he was awarded the BAFTA Prize for the music in the movie Z.
His compositions have been performed by world-renowned artists such as The Beatles, Shirley Basei, Joan Baez, and Edith Piaf.

Το 1964 συνθέτει τον πιο αναγνωρίσιμο ελληνικό ρυθμό διεθνώς, το συρτάκι “Ζορμπάς”, το οποίο μπορείτε να ακούσετε εδώ και με το οποίο ήταν υποψήφιος για Grammy.
To 1970 του απονεμήθηκε το βραβείο πρωτότυπης μουσικής BAFTA για τη μουσική στην ταινία Ζ.
Συνθέσεις του έχουν ερμηνευτεί από καλλιτέχνες παγκοσμίου φήμης, όπως οι Beatles, η Σίρλεϊ Μπάσεϊ, η Τζόαν Μπαέζ και η Εντίθ Πιάφ.

During the dictatorship in Greece (1967-1974), because of his left-wing political believes, he was arrested, imprisoned, exiled, and his life was endangered. Thanks to international movement by personalities like Dimitri Shostakovich, Laurence Olivier, Yve Montand, Arthur Miller, and others, the Greek Junta was forced to let him free and travel to Paris in 1970.

After the fall of the dictatorship in 1974, he returned to Greece and gave many concerts together with known singer Maria Farantouri. He was very active in political debates and was elected twice with the communist party in the Greek Parliament.

In 1983 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize.

Λόγω των αριστερών πολιτικών του καταβολών, έχει συλληφθεί, φυλακιστεί και εξοριστεί, στη διάρκεια της δικτατορίας (1967-1974). Η υγεία του εντός της φυλακής επιδεινώθηκε τόσο πολύ που κινδύνευσε η ζωή του. Στο εξωτερικό ξεσηκώνεται θύελλα διαμαρτυριών. Προσωπικότητες όπως οι Ντμίτρι Σοστακόβιτς, Άρθουρ Μίλερ, Λώρενς Ολίβιε, Υβ Μοντάν και άλλοι, δημιουργούν επιτροπές για την απελευθέρωσή του. Τελικά, υπό την πίεση αυτή αποφυλακίζεται και ταξιδεύει στο Παρίσι τον Απρίλιο του 1970.

Το 1974 με την πτώση της Δικτατορίας γυρίζει στην Ελλάδα και δίνει πολλές συναυλίες μαζί με τη Μαρία Φαραντούρη. Παράλληλα, εμφανίζει έντονη πολιτική δραστηριότητα, περνώντας, μάλιστα, και από το αξίωμα του βουλευτή στο πλευρό της αριστεράς.

Το 1983 βραβεύεται με το Βραβείο Ειρήνης Λένιν.

He has composed thousands of Greek songs, (mostly Laika and Entechno), symphonic music, music for operas, ballet, and chamber music, etc..

Έχει συνθέσει συμφωνίες, όπερες, μπαλέτα, μουσική δωματίου, μουσική για τον κινηματογράφο και έναν τεράστιο αριθμό τραγουδιών.

Theodorakis was an integral part of the Greek political and musical scene for decades. His body lay in state in a chapel of the Athens Cathedral for three days, before being buried in Crete, where his family is from.

Ο Θεοδωράκης ήταν αναπόσπαστο μέρος της ελληνικής πολιτικής και μουσικής σκηνής για πολλές δεκαετίες. Η σορός του εκτέθηκε σε λαϊκό προσκύνημα στο παρεκκλήσι της Μητρόπολης Αθηνών για τρεις ημέρες, πριν μεταφερθεί στην Κρήτη, από όπου είναι η οικογένειά του.

In Greece, Theodorakis is often mentioned together with the other known composer, Manos Hatzidakis.
They are born in the same year, but Hatzidakis already died in 1994, and unlike Theodorakis, was not involved in politics but mostly with his musical career.

Both composers are equally known in Greece and were the examples and inspiration for many.
