Introduction:

This eBook is designed for the Greek language student as well as the lover of Greece. It contains three charming and authentic travelogues from trips to Athens, Sparta, and Mani between the years of 1857-1876. J. P. Mahaffy describes Athens while Bayard Taylor gives an account of all three cities.

These writers’ personal accounts of what these Greek cities were like roughly 150 years ago are not only a valuable source of historical evidence, but also an interesting observation of
the everyday life in Greece at that time. After the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, most of Greece had come under Ottoman rule. As revolutionary nationalism finally grew across Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries and the power of the Ottoman Empire declined, Greek nationalism began to gather momentum and found support in Western European philhellenes. The Greek War of Independence lasted from 1821 to 1832, after which the Greek kingdom was established.

Leisure travel to Greece began in the second half of the 19th century, and the writings of foreign travelers to Greece were considered a significant source of information on the condition of modern Greece at that time.

Τhe Benefits of Parallel Texts
 They allow readers to access texts beyond their level. The presence of the translation right at hand provides you with support as long as you need it.
 They expose readers to a world of literary and descriptive language (rather than just an isolated vocabulary list).
 They help readers to expand their vocabulary, both in Greek and English, and also increase their ability to use words correctly and in context.

How This Book Works
Each text is presented in 3 different ways:
1) Greek-English | In this part, the Greek text is intertwined with the English, sentence by
