Teaching Greek at Omilo, Back In 1997
Introduction
Omilo was founded in 1996 by Maya and Dimitris Andreadis, and the very first Omilo Greek Language and Culture Course took place in the village of Nea Makri, Attiki, in July 1997.
Sophia was the first teacher at Omilo, and was teaching several courses during 1997 and 1998.
Although in those times you could count the Greek language schools on one hand, and it was not so obvious to find teachers used to teach Greek to non-Greeks,
Sophia was very experienced in teaching Greek to foreigners since she had been already teaching Greek to Americans for many years while living in the USA.
Upon her return to Greece from the USA, she was happy to continue teaching Greek to foreigners, together with Omilo.

Μετά από 25 χρόνια.
After 25 years.
Sophia
Πράγματι. Λες και ήτανε πέρυσι.
Indeed. It feels like it was yesterday.
Dimitris
Και όμως έχει περάσει το ένα τέταρτο του αιώνα.
And yet it’s been a quarter of a century.
Sophia
Δεν το πιστεύω.
I can’t believe it.
Dimitris
Με αφορμή, λοιπόν, τα 25 χρόνια του Ομιλώ
Taking the 25 years of Omilo as an opportunity,
θα θέλαμε να ανακαλέσουμε λίγο, μερικές από τις μνήμες που είχαμε τότε,
όταν ξεκινήσαμε.
we would like to revisit some of the memories that we have from back then,
when we started.
Νομίζω μαζί τα πρώτα μαθήματα που κάναμε ήταν, αν θυμάμαι καλά, στη Νέα Μάκρη;
I think that the first courses that we worked on together if I remember correctly, took place in Nea Makri?
Sophia
Σωστά.
That’s right.
Dimitris
Ήταν το ξεκίνημα μιας περιπέτειας για όλους.
It was the beginning of an adventure for everyone.
Sophia
Και για σας βέβαια, που ήταν πραγματικό ξεκίνημα, αλλά και για μένα.
Of course, for you, it was a real starting point, but for me as well.
Θυμάμαι ξεκινούσα πρωί πρωί από το σπίτι,
έκανα μία υπέροχη διαδρομή, ανέβαινα το βουνό, την Πεντέλη,
το κατέβαινα για να φτάσω στη Νέα Μάκρη.
Μετά το βουνό έβλεπα τη θάλασσα μπροστά μου.
Σαν πιάτο, όπως λένε!
I remember leaving my house early every morning,
following a wonderful rout, going up the mountain Penteli
and then down again to get to Nea Makri.
After the mountain, I could see the sea ahead of me.
Such a beautiful view.
Dimitris
Αυτό που λες. Έχεις απόλυτο δίκιο.
I see what you mean. You’re absolutely right.
Κι εγώ θυμάμαι οδηγούσαμε από το Μαρούσι,
And I remember that when we were driving from Maroussi (North Athens),
ανεβαίναμε την Πεντέλη που ήταν καταπράσινη, κατεβαίναμε την Πεντέλη
we would go up Penteli (mountain), which was all leafy and green, then went down
και ήμασταν στο νερό, δίπλα στη θάλασσα.
and suddenly we found ourselves right next to the water, the sea front.
Ήταν πολύ ωραίο ξεκίνημα της ημέρας.
It was a very nice way to start the day.
Θυμάσαι πού κάναμε τα μαθήματα;
Do you remember where we taught the lessons?
Sophia
Σε ένα ξενοδοχείο, θα έλεγα επάνω στη θάλασσα.
In a hotel, I’d say, by the sea.
Dimitris
Σωστά. Και είχε και μια καταπληκτική πισίνα.
That’s right. And it had an amazing pool, too.
Sophia
Τι πισίνα ήταν αυτή;
That was such an amazing pool!
Κάποιες φορές θυμάμαι που είχα κάνει μπάνιο.
I remember swimming there a few times.
Όχι κάποιες φορές, κάνω λάθος.
Maybe not a few times, I might be mistaken.
Ήταν ένα Σαββατοκύριακο ίσως, που διανυκτέρευσα.
It was probably a weekend when I stayed over.
Dimitris
Μόνο ένα;
Just one?
Sophia
Μπορεί και περισσότερα.
Maybe more.
Νομίζω περισσότερα.
I think it was more.
Καλά, είναι 25 χρόνια τώρα αυτά που πέρασαν.
Well, it’s been 25 years since.
Με απατά η μνήμη μου ίσως. Λοιπόν, θυμάμαι ξύπνησα πρωί,
The memories have faded. Well, I remember waking up one morning,
άνοιξα το μπαλκόνι,
I opened the balcony door,
μπροστά μου ήταν η πισίνα
and the pool was right in front of me,
και το πρώτο πράγμα που σκέφτηκα ήταν να κάνω ένα ωραίο πρωινό μπάνιο.
So the first thing that came to mind was to go for a really nice morning swim.
Dimitris
Νομίζω είναι από τις πιο δυνατές αναμνήσεις
I think it’s one of the most vivid memories,
ότι ξεκινούσαμε τη μέρα μας τόσο ωραία
when we started our day in such a nice way
και είχαμε τη βουτιά μας είτε στην πισίνα είτε στη θάλασσα.
And could take a dip into the pool or the sea.
Και μετά…
And then…
Sophia
Και μετά το μάθημά μας!
And then we went to class!
Dimitris
Βρισκόμασταν με πολύ ωραίους ανθρώπους.
We were among really lovely people.
Sophia
Από τόσες διαφορετικές χώρες.
From so many different countries.
Dimitris
Θυμάσαι ποιοι ήτανε τότε;
Do you remember who was there at the time?
Sophia
Θυμάμαι χαρακτηριστικά μια κοπέλα, δύο κοπέλες από το Βέλγιο.
I remember a girl very well, two girls from Belgium.
Η μια ήταν με τον μπαμπά της, με τον πατέρα της.
One of them was there with her father.
Dimitris
Νομίζω μιλάς για τον Γιοστ. Ο μπαμπάς ήταν ο Γιοστ και η κόρη η Σάρα.
I think you’re talking about Joost. The father was called Joost and the daughter was called Sarah.
Μάλιστα! Ναι ναι!
That’s right! Yes!
Sophia
Ήταν και μια άλλη κοπέλα που νομίζω ότι ήταν από το Βέλγιο.
There was one more girl from Belgium, I think.
Αλλά δεν μπορώ να θυμηθώ το όνομά της.
But I can’t remember her name.
Θυμάμαι κάποια κοπέλα από την Αυστρία, πολύ χαρακτηριστικά.
I remember a girl from Austria very clearly.
Τώρα ούτε ονόματα έχω συγκρατήσει…
Now I can’t even recall their names…

Ε λογικό, μετά από τόσα χρόνια.
Well, that makes sense, after all these years.
Sophia
Έχω χάσει κάθε επαφή.
I’ve lost all contact.
Dimitris
Νομίζω ήτανε και η Κάγια.
I think Kaija was there, too.
Sophia
Μπράβο! Από τη Φινλανδία!
Yes indeed! From Finland!
Dimitris
Κι η κόρη της, από τη Φινλανδία.
And her daughter, from Finland.
Sophia
Βέβαια!
Of course!
Dimitris
Από τους πρώτους μας μαθητές επίσης.
One of our first students, too.
Sophia
Βέβαια! Η Κάγια! Με την οποία δε χαθήκαμε και εκτός του ότι τη συνάντησα και την επόμενη χρονιά
Of course! Kaija! We kept in touch with her and I met her the next year,
πάλι στη Νέα Μάκρη, ή ίσως στη Λίμνη Ευβοίας.
again in Nea Makri, or perhaps in Limni, on the island of Evia.
Dimitris
Σίγουρα!
Definitely!
Sophia
Α, μετά ήταν στη Λίμνη που είχαμε πάει.
Oh, then she was also in Limni (Evia), when we (had courses) there.
Πέρασαν χρόνια και ξαναβρήκα την Κάγια, ξέρεις πού;
Years went by and I came across Kaija again [later on]. Can you imagine where?
Dimitris
Πού;
Where?
Sophia
Στη Φινλανδία!
In Finland!
Dimitris
Δεν το πιστεύω!
I can’t believe it!
Τυχαία; Ή ήταν κανονισμένο;
Was it by chance? Or did you make plans to meet?
Sophia
Όχι, ήταν προγραμματισμένο.
No, it was planned.
Μου δόθηκε μια ευκαιρία να πάω στη Φινλανδία,
I had the chance to go to Finland,
επικοινωνήσαμε και με φιλοξένησε.
I reached out to her and she hosted me.
Ήταν πολύ συγκινητικό.
It was very touching.
Dimitris
Καταπληκτικό, καταπληκτικό!
Incredible!
Sophia
Ήταν πάρα πολύ ωραία!
It was very, very nice!
Αλλά η Νέα Μάκρη πραγματικά…
But Nea Makri was really…
Λέω “Νέα Μάκρη” και έχω εικόνες υπέροχες!
I say “Nea Makri” and so many beautiful moments come to my mind!
Dimitris
Ωραία! Μετά από ένα μικρό διαφημιστικό διάλειμμα θα συνεχίσουμε!
