The Golden Decades of Greek Songs<\/h2>\n

The 1950s and 1960s are often described as the golden decades of modern Greek music<\/strong>. During these years, Greece experienced an extraordinary artistic bloom. Distinguished composers created unforgettable melodies, and unique performers gave them life with powerful voices and strong stage presence.<\/p>\n

What makes this period even more remarkable is that many of these songs traveled far beyond Greece<\/strong>. They were translated, re-recorded, and performed by famous international artists , sometimes even in the original Greek language.<\/p>\n

The list of such songs is much longer than the examples below, but these classics give you a clear idea of how Greek music conquered the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Without a doubt, one of the most famous Greek melodies worldwide is \u201c\u03a4\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03b9\u03ac\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    The song was composed by Manos Hadjidakis<\/span><\/span> <\/a><\/span>and performed in a unique and unforgettable way by Melina Mercouri<\/span><\/span> in the film Never on Sunday<\/span><\/span><\/em>,
    \ndirected by Jules Dassin<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

    In 1960, Hadjidakis won the Academy Award for Best Original Song , a historic moment for Greek music.<\/p>\n

    Decades later, in the late 1990s, the international band Pink Martini<\/span><\/span> recorded their own version,\u00a0 in Greek,\u00a0 bringing the song back to global audiences once again.<\/p>\n

    And of course, who could forget the charming and humorous performance by Miss Piggy<\/span><\/span> on The Muppet Show<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong>?

    In Never on Sunday<\/em><\/a><\/span>, Mercouri<\/strong> plays Ilya, an independent and free-spirited woman in the port of Piraeus. Dassin himself plays Homer, an American intellectual fascinated by Greek culture, who tries (unsuccessfully) to \u201ceducate\u201d her morally. The film\u2019s atmosphere, humor, and music made it an international success.<\/p>\n

    2. The song \u2018\u039c\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c3\u2019 \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03ae \u03c4\u03b7 \u03b2\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1\u2019 [On this (fishing) boat]<\/h3>\n

    In 1960, Manos Hadjidakis composed the song \u2018\u039c\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c3\u2019 \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03ae \u03c4\u03b7 \u03b2\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1\u2019 [On this (fishing) boat]<\/a>, for the film \u2018Madalena\u2019. The performer of the song was one of the most famous and beloved actresses in the history of Greek cinema, Aliki Vouyouklaki. But the very same song was also performed \u2013in fact in Greek\u2013 by the well-known artist Harry Belafonte!<\/p>\n

    In 1959, another great Greek actress, Tzeni Karezi, recorded for the soundtrack of the film \u2018\u03a4\u03bf \u039d\u03b7\u03c3\u03af \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u0393\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b1\u03af\u03c9\u03bd\u2019 (The Island of the Brave) a sweet melancholic song titled \u2018\u039c\u03b7\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u03c1\u03c9\u03c4\u03ac\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u2019 (Don\u2019t ask the sky)<\/a>, composed by Manos Hadjidakis. Three years later, in 1962, the popular American singer Brenda Lee performed the song in English, this time titled \u2018All Alone Am I\u2019; the song instantly became an international hit.<\/p>\n

    The song was also performed by the well-known singer-songwriter Georges Moustaki<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, helping it reach audiences beyond Greece.<\/p>\n

    In the 60\u2019s the natural beauty of mainland Greece and Greek islands served as a backdrop to various films shot in the country; as a result Greece became internationally known.<\/p>\n

    A typical example of these films is the American production \u2018Boy on a dolphin\u2019, directed by Jean Negulesco (1957), most of which was shot on the picturesque island of Hydra. Sophia Loren and Tony Maroudas<\/strong> performed in Greek a sweet and very romantic song titled \u2018\u03a4\u03b9 \u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u2019 \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03cc \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03bb\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5 \u03b1\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7;\u2019 (What is this they call love?)<\/a> (music by Takis Morakis, lyrics by Giannis Fermanoglou).<\/p>\n

    6. The song \u2018Misirlou\u2019 (meaning \u2018Egyptian woman\u2019)<\/h3>\n

    \u2018Misirlou\u2019 (meaning \u2018Egyptian woman<\/a>\u2019) is the title of an old rebetiko song. The number of artists who have performed it as well as its instrumental versions is impressively large.
    \nAmong these versions,     instantly recognizable is that of guitarist Dick Dale in the 60\u2019s, especially after it was used in the film Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino<\/a> (1994).<\/p>\n

    In 2004, the song returned symbolically to<\/p>\n

    Greece when Anna Vissi<\/span><\/span><\/strong> performed it at the Closing Ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.<\/a><\/p>\n
