{"id":7316,"date":"2023-08-01T13:21:34","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T10:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thesandbox.eu\/fr\/2016\/11\/02\/little-bit-greek-etymology\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:37:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:37:35","slug":"greek-etymology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/omilo.com\/fr\/greek-etymology\/","title":{"rendered":"Greek Etymology &#8211; Why we chose the name \u00ab\u00a0Omilo\u00a0\u00bb ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greek etymology, is something we often use in our Greek lessons.<br \/>\nBut this time, we will use it to explain you a bit more about why we chose the name \u00ab\u00a0omilo\u00a0\u00bb or \u00a0\u00bb \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce\u00a0\u00bb.<br \/>\n\u00ab\u00a0Omilo Greek Language and Culture\u00a0\u00bb was founded in 1996, so we are around for many years \ud83d\ude42 Even longer than \u00ab\u00a0google\u00a0\u00bb ! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>And &#8230;in case you were wondering&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOmilo\u201d or \u00ab\u00a0\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce\u00a8,\u00a0 actually is a verb and means \u201cI speak\u201d!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because at Omilo, we really try to focus on \u00ab\u00a0speaking Greek\u00a0\u00bb!<\/p>\n<p>If you already know some Greek, then you now might wonder: Why \u201comilo\u00a0\u00bb (\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce) and not \u201cmilao\u201d (\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9)?<br \/>\nWell, both verbs mean \u00ab\u00a0I speak\u00a0\u00bb, but the latter is more used in the everyday Greek language, so you will hear it more.<\/p>\n<p>Careful; when you pronounce \u00ab\u00a0omilo\u00a0\u00bb, <strong>make sure you stress the LAST O<\/strong>, since also there is the stress in the verb; <strong>\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce<\/strong><\/p>\n<div  class='avia-button-wrap avia-button-center  avia-builder-el-0  el_before_av_button  avia-builder-el-first ' ><a href='https:\/\/omilo.com\/el\/omilo-greek-etymology\/ '  class='avia-button av-icon-on-hover  avia-icon_select-yes-left-icon avia-size-small avia-position-center '  style='background-color:#e3b505; border-color:#e3b505; color:#444444; ' ><span class='avia_button_icon avia_button_icon_left ' aria-hidden='true' data-av_icon='\ue875' data-av_iconfont='entypo-fontello'><\/span><span class='avia_iconbox_title' >Click here to read this article in Greek and listen to the Greek audio<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>First, a bit of Greek etymology!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over the years, we realized that many students do not realize that \u00ab\u00a0omilo\u00a0\u00bb is actually an existing verb, and others pronounce the name wrongly, so here some explanations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, <a href=\"https:\/\/omilo.com\/fr\/a-propos-de-nous\/omilo-fete-ses-25-ans\/\">Maya and Dimitris Andreadis founded Omilo<\/a>, and chose this name since it comes from the ancient verb <strong>\u00ab\u1f41\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u1ff6\u00bb<\/strong><br \/>\nThis verb, in ancient times, meant \u201cto associate, to keep company with somebody\u201d, but also \u201cto be a student or to frequent, to hang out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years the meaning of the word changed and got another definition;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cto express myself in oral speech, to discuss\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In our days, we mostly use the simple form\u00a0 \u201cmilao\u201d (\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9) in modern Greek, but we can still find the older form \u00ab\u00a0omilo\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0 in official or standard phrases.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u03bf\u03b4\u03b7\u03b3\u03cc\u00bb<\/strong> (min omilite ston odigo) = don\u2019t speak to the driver. It\u2019s a phrase that we can read on bus signs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b5 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac;\u00bb<\/strong> (omilite ellinika?) = do you speak Greek? -It was the title of a show about the Greek language.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03ad\u03b4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2\u00bb<\/strong> (omilo apo kathedras) = to express myself dogmatically, with the prestige that my place gives to me.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The form \u00ab\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce\u00bb survives also in other words<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Examples;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2\u00bb<\/strong> = speaker.<br \/>\nE.g. \u03a4\u03bf \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc \u03ac\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03b3\u03b5 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03bf\u03c7\u03ae \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae. = the audience was listening carefully to the speaker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1\u00bb<\/strong> = speech.<br \/>\nE.g. \u0394\u03b5\u03bd \u03ae\u03c1\u03b8\u03b5 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2 \u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b5\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1. = Very few people came to his election speech.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1\u00bb<\/strong> =conversation.<br \/>\nE.g. \u03a7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b5\u03af\u03c7\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b7 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b1\u03b6\u03af \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5. = I am glad that \u0399had a short conversation with him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2\u00bb<\/strong> =interlocutor.<br \/>\nE.g. \u03a0\u03c1\u03ad\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9 \u03bd\u03b1 \u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03ad\u03c2 \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03bd\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b7\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c0\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2. = You have to respect your interlocutors and not to interrupt them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2\u00bb<\/strong> = communicative, talkative.<br \/>\nE.g. \u03a3\u03ae\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1 \u03b4\u03b5\u03bd \u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2, \u03ad\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5 \u03ba\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9;= Today you are not very talkative, is something wrong?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">++++++++++++++++++++++++++<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The conjugations of the verb &#8211; horseback riding,<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2 \u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03bd\u00bb (omilos epihiriseon) = group of companies.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, many Greek native speakers are often confused, and think our school is called &lsquo;\u039f\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2. (the club, the association)<br \/>\nAlso, when you say \u00ab\u00a0\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2\u00a0\u00bb in its accusative form, it loses the final \u00ab\u00a0s\u00a0\u00bb, and becomes \u00ab\u00a0(\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd) \u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u00a0\u00bb.
