How do you keep improving your Greek after returning home from an intensive language course in Greece?<\/p>\n

This was a question we often heard from Omilo students,\u00a0 and it eventually led to the creation of \u00ab\u03a6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac!\u00bb (Fygame gia Ellinika \u2013 Off we go to learn Greek!)<\/strong>, our language book for intermediate learners of Modern Greek.<\/p>\n

Written by experienced Omilo teachers Marina Braila, Konstantinos Oikonomou and the late Dora Stoimenidou<\/strong>,
\nthe book is the result of many years of teaching Greek to adult students from all over the world.<\/p>\n

Today, \u03a6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac!<\/em> is used not only by Omilo students, but also by teachers and schools teaching Modern Greek in different countries.<\/p>\n

How did \u03a6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac! begin?<\/h2>\n

The story goes back to 2006<\/strong>, when a dedicated Omilo student suggested that we offer lessons by email.<\/p>\n

It was a very practical idea.<\/p>\n

Many students came to Greece for an intensive Omilo course, made good progress with their Greek and then returned home wondering:<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can I keep practising my Greek until my next course?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many learners, finding suitable Modern Greek lessons at their level in their home country was not easy ,\u00a0 especially at intermediate and more advanced levels.<\/p>\n

So we started thinking about ways to help our students continue learning from home.<\/p>\n

In 2008, Marina, Konstantinos<\/a><\/span> and Dora \u2013 at the time three full-time Omilo teachers \u2013 worked together to create a series of email lessons for four different language levels.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Creating these lessons also showed us something important: after years of teaching international students, our teachers had developed a wealth of their own material and knew very well which topics, texts and exercises helped adult learners progress.<\/p>\n

The next step came naturally.<\/p>\n

\n

From Omilo lessons to a Greek language book<\/h2>\n

In 2010, Marina, Konstantinos and Dora started working together on something much bigger: their own Greek language book<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Omilo founders Maya and Dimitris<\/a> supported the project, and after a great deal of writing, testing, editing and teamwork, the book was finally published in January 2013<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And it had a name:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u03a6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac!\u00bb<\/h3>\n

Literally, \u03c6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5<\/strong> means \u201cwe left\u201d or \u201cwe\u2019re off\u201d, but it is also a very common expression in everyday Greek meaning something like \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cOff we go!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

So the title captures exactly the spirit of the book: Off we go to learn Greek!<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2019, a second edition<\/strong> was published, and the book also became available online in both printed and eBook formats.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Since then, \u03a6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac!<\/em> has continued its journey, reaching learners and teachers of Greek around the world.<\/p>\n

\n

Who is the book for?<\/h2>\n

\u03a6\u03cd\u03b3\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac!<\/em> was designed specifically for adult learners of Modern Greek at an intermediate level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is suitable for learners around B1 and the early stages of B2<\/strong>, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).<\/p>\n

Rather than being a traditional grammar book, it focuses on helping learners use and understand Greek through realistic topics, contemporary language, vocabulary, reading and listening practice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You can work with the book together with a Greek teacher, but it can also be used for independent study<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The main part of the book consists of 12 thematic units<\/strong>, which gradually become more challenging.<\/p>\n

The topics are connected with everyday life and give learners the opportunity to practise Greek while also discovering more about life and culture in Greece.<\/p>\n
