When you start learning Greek, one of the verbs you will use often is \u201c\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9\u201d (\u201cmilao\u201d), which means \u201cto speak or to talk\u201d.<\/p>\n

For example, the following sentences might be very useful to know, when you travel in Greece:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u03b4\u03b5\u03bd \u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ac \u03b5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u201d = \u201cI do not speak Greek well\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03b5 \u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac;\u201d = Do you speak English?<\/p>\n

But first,\u00a0 some Greek grammar…<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

When you use a verb in Greek, it is important to learn how to conjugate it.
\nIf you just started learning Greek, then concentrate only on the Present tense.<\/p>\n

The verb \u201c\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9\u201d belongs to the second group of verbs ending in \u2013\u03ac\u03c9. It is conjugated in the present tense by adding the endings -\u03ac\u03c9, -\u03ac\u03c2, -\u03ac\u03b5\u03b9, -\u03ac\u03bc\u03b5, -\u03ac\u03c4\u03b5, -\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5 to the stem \u03bc\u03b9\u03bb-.
\nIn the simple past and simple future tenses, however, the respective endings are attached to the stem \u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3- [see the table below].

Another way to say \u201cI speak\u201d; \u201c Omilo – \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce \u201d !<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

In 1996 we chose the name \u201cOmilo\u201d for our Greek Language School.
\nWhy?\u00a0<\/strong>Well, because it actually also means \u201cI speak\u201d!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, we thought of the alternative name \u201cmilao\u201d, but we did like the fact that \u201comilo\u201d comes from the ancient Greek verb \u00ab\u1f41\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u1ff6\u00bb which used to mean \u201cto associate, to keep company with somebody\u201d, but also \u201cto be a student or to frequent, to hang out\u201d.
\nOver the years the meaning of the word changed and since modern times we use \u201cmilao\u201d (\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9) in modern Greek.
\nHowever, many elderly people still say \u201comilo\u201d, instead of milao.<\/p>\n
